Replacing a missing tooth or missing teeth is more than a matter of appearances—although that is certainly an important consideration. Dr. Thomas Neslund and the team at Carlisle Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Carlisle, PA, want you to be comfortable with and proud of your smile. But in addition to that there are oral and general health concerns that make tooth replacement all the more important. Did you know, for example, that having one just missing tooth can lead to the development of gum disease or symptoms of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder? And because missing teeth may making chewing difficult, some people actually are malnourished as a result. For these and other reasons, Dr. Neslund wants you to know about your tooth replacement choices at our office. One is certain to accommodate your lifestyle and your budget.
Dentures and Partials
Removable dentures and partials have long been a trusted choice among dentists for their patients with tooth loss. And for good reason: they are easy to take care of and generally quite affordable. Today, these oral prosthetics are fabricated to look and feel more natural. A full denture replicates the natural look of your smile with false teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base. Dr. Neslund will make sure yours fits comfortably and securely.
Partials are designed to replace several missing teeth that may or may not be consecutive. This dental prosthetic fits like a puzzle in your mouth; clips attach to your remaining teeth to hold your partial in place.
Crown and Bridge
For a permanent solution to tooth loss, we offer crown and bridge work. This tooth replacement option requires Dr. Neslund to attach crowns to the healthy teeth that are on either side of your missing teeth. These crowns support the replacement teeth, or pontics, that bridge the gap in your smile. Alternatively, a bridge can be held in place by dental implants.
Dental Implants
Perhaps the most natural looking and functioning of all tooth replacement choices is a dental implant. With this treatment, Dr. Neslund surgically implants a small titanium post in your jaw bone. This biocompatible post replicates a tooth root. And because it is biocompatible, the post naturally integrates with the surrounding bone tissue to form a secure anchor. This tissue now has a job to do—namely to hold the post in place—so the bone is far less likely to degenerate. Once you’ve completely healed from surgery, you’ll return to our office where Dr. Neslund will remove the gum tissue that has formed over the implant and attach your new tooth replacement, usually a porcelain crown.
